Through her company Unagi Travel, Sonoe Azuma takes stuffed animals on trips and reports on their tours via social media networks to bring happiness to their owners. The animals’ owners come from various backgrounds, including people who cannot travel due to illness, and draw inspiration from the little travelers.
A former bank employee, Azuma got the idea for her travel agency after she took her stuffed eel, or unagi in Japanese, with her on trips and put the eel’s travelogue on her blog.
Her business soon became popular throughout the nation, and was featured in The Yomiuri Shimbun and The Japan News last October. Overseas media also began to write about her tours, and since then about 100 people in foreign countries have used her company.“It’s amazing that such a diverse range of people like my service,” the 39-year-old said.
Azuma’s business has attracted particular attention in the United States, thanks to a popular TV program that covered it. A primary school in a disadvantaged area of New Mexico dispatched a stuffed animal to Japan so its students, who have little chance to experience family trips, could experience the journey vicariously. A man in Los Angeles who spent his childhood in Tokyo had his teddy bear make a “homecoming.”
U.S. Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy was also interested in Azuma’s tours. She met stuffed animals from the United States and tweeted about them.
“I hope I can transmit information about Japan to the world through my tours,” Azuma said. Her dream is expanding.
ぬいぐるみ専用ツアー 旅する「分身」に励まされ

好天に恵まれた９月のある日、石川県から来たペンギンのペンちゃんと、京都府に住む羊のひろしくんら“５人”が参加したのは、行き先が事前に明かされない ミステリーツアー。東京の代々木公園をサイクリングし、東京五輪の記念碑などを回ったら、パンケーキで腹ごしらえ。午後からは都庁の展望台を見学した。以 上で、参加費２０００円。
主催するウナギトラベル（http://unagi-travel.com/）の東園 絵さん（３８）は３年前から、ぬいぐるみ専用ツアーを手がける。自分で作ったウナギのぬいぐるみを旅させてブログにつづり、友人らに好評だったのがきっか け。当初は口コミで小規模に始めたが、人気が出てきた最近は、多い時で月１０回程度、ツアーを行う。出雲、鎌倉、横浜といった国内から、米国など海外にも 手を広げる。「これまで２百数十件の利用がありました。繰り返し利用するケースも多く、４割はリピーターです」と東さん。
パンケーキに大喜びするぬいぐるみたち
主婦は「ぬいぐるみが旅する姿が刺激になり、できないことを嘆くより、できることをしようと思えるようになった」と語る。
重い障害があり、車いすを使う関東地方の女性もリピーターの一人。ツアーで自分のぬいぐるみが、階段や狭い道を行き、集合写真で他のぬいぐるみを支えてあ げているのを見て、「私にできないことをしている」と大感激。ふだんは外出を避けがちなのに、東さんに会いにやって来た。
このほか、「父の死で沈んでいた家族が明るくなり、会話が増えた」「小学生になってもぬいぐるみを離さない息子に自立を促すきっかけになった」「転職に迷う日々、ぬいぐるみを通じた知らない人との交流が楽しみ」という人もいる。
こうした利用者の心情について、お茶の水女子大教授（発達心理学）の井原成男さ んは「旅するぬいぐるみが、心理学で言うイマジナリー・コンパニオン（空想上の友）に近い役割をしているのではないか」と分析する。イマジナリー・コンパ ニオンは、人が次の段階へ進むための橋渡しをしてくれる存在。「自分の分身を旅させることが、実際に外の世界に踏み出したり他人と交流したりするまでのつ なぎ役を務めている。ぬいぐるみツアーは精神的なリハーサルになっているのでしょう」というのが、井原さんの見立てだ。
東さんは「単にぬいぐるみを旅させて終わり、ではなく、温かいコミュニケーションの機会になればと思う。前向きになれないでいる人が、一歩踏み出す励みにつながっているならうれしい」と話している。
